Benefits of the Alexander Technique

Unique method of re-education

The Alexander Technique is a unique method of re-education. It is very much a self-development tool. Young children have an alertness and poise that allows them to sit, stand and move gracefully without strain, yet rarely do we see the same in adults. Most of us have developed habits that interfere with our “good use” – our natural co-ordination and functioning. We become disconnected and find ourselves reacting automatically in ways that are frequently harmful to our well-being, reducing our effectiveness in whatever we do.

The Alexander Technique teaches us to recognise our habitual patterns and gives us a means of challenging the resulting misuse. Restrictive postural habits are released and new feelings of confidence, lightness and freedom can replace those of discomfort, tiredness and the inability to cope.

The result of this misuse may also be experienced as many specific symptoms, such as headaches, backache, RSI, stiff neck and shoulders, or more generally as a lack of poise and vitality or a sense of being ‘out of touch’ with our body. Since the body and mind are interconnected, a lack of physical poise can affect our state of mind and our ability to cope with life, and vice versa.

The Alexander Technique is not a ‘cure’ or a ‘therapy’ for specific conditions but, as our overall condition improves with this work, many symptoms start to disappear. Many people therefore come to the Alexander Technique to deal with specific conditions, such as:

  • Back, neck, shoulder and other muscular skeletal problems
  • RSI
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Asthma, breathing and vocal disorders
  • Stress, depression and anxiety
  • Problems with co-ordination or movement
  • Rehabilitation after operations, injury or illness
  • Stress related conditions, such as IBS
  • High blood pressure
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica
  • ME/Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Pregnancy and childbirth

The Technique can also help improve:

  • Stature and posture
  • Agility and stamina
  • Focus and attention
  • Confidence and self esteem
  • Co-ordination and efficiency of movement
  • Ability to cope with stress and recovery from illness
  • Creative and sports performance
  • Public speaking
