About Me

I am an experienced Counsellor, Therapist and Teacher of the Alexander Technique in Central Manchester.

This page introduces a bit more about me, how I first came to the Alexander Technique at a very young age, and subsequently developed skills and qualifications in a range of therapies.

Teacher of the Alexander Technique

Whilst at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama at Glasgow in the 1980s, I was fortunate to have group and individual Alexander Technique lessons as part of the course. There were regularly four or more teachers who worked at the music college and so I rotated who I would have lessons from, which offered me a much wider perspective.  After the first couple of years, I continued as a private student as I found the Technique such a strong support to my learning.

Exposed to the principles of the Technique since the age of seventeen, I quickly appreciated the range of its applications. In the first weeks of learning the three main principles I was able to apply them to my everyday activities, such as washing up and cycling to college. I realised this was a new way of living-in-ease and resolved to train to become a teacher of this revolutionary Technique.

I completed the three year training to become a Teacher of the Alexander Technique at the Alexander Technique Training Centre in Devon (now the Centre for Constructive Awareness and Related Education) and graduated in 1987. I took a short break from teaching in the 1990s and then re-trained at the Manchester Alexander Technique Training School (MATTS).

The Alexander Technique informs all my activities in life and teaching it to my students brings a great joy in the shared exploration of body/mind use. I share AT work also with the local teachers in the area, as I value sharing knowledge and experience.

Experienced Counsellor & Therapist

Having first qualified in CBT therapy in 2016, I now specialise in integrative CBT approach and have worked in recent years with clients in local agencies and in private practice. I qualified 2018 and 2019 as an Advanced Integrative Therapist at the College of Cognitive Behaviour Therapies (CCBT) at Bath University and Richmond University, London, each offering different integrations.

As well as my work in private practice, I have over three years’ experience at the start of my therapy service working voluntarily with people dealing with alcohol dependency at the SWAN Project in Bristol, over a year on a voluntary basis at IMPACT Swindon and Wiltshire Active Recovery, three years on a voluntary and sessional basis for Anxiety UK and for Arts of Change Trust, Dudley, with children, young people and young adults. More recently I have nearly three years’ experience working in IAPT Step 3 for the NHS. All work with agencies and privately has been fully supervised to BACP and BABCP ethical standards.

I have worked with clients dealing with a variety of issues, including:

  • Alcohol or drug dependency
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Stress & trauma

In my spare time, I play violin, viola and double-bass as a semi-professional, enjoy cycling, barefoot running and connection with like-minded people who share their interests, work and skills.
